Background and Henna Care
For a while now, I've been doing Temporary Henna designs and have
discovered it to be fun and socially acceptable way of having a design
on my body that is unique and removable.
Henna designs have been used all over the orient, Middle East, and
North Africa for many centuries. Designs
have been used for weddings, births, and just for decoration. Although
women have used traditionally for and Mehndi it is fast becoming a look
for men as modern tattoo influence has become part of the Henna craze. Artists
from all backgrounds are coming into the field as well as beginners from
the groups that were originally attracted to art form. The
process of applying the Henna is easily explained but the process can be
done for varying degrees of time. First, the paste is applied in the desired pattern and allowed to begin drying. Normally a lemon juice/ sugar mixture is applied to “glue it down” but the lemon/ sugar is in our paste already. The longer the Henna stays on the darker the design. It is best to keep the area of the design warm for optimal results. Removal
of the paste comes next, usually several hours after the design has been
applied, usually with a vegetable oil (olive oil is my preferred) pour a
small amount of oil into your hand and apply to the paste area. As the
paste absorbs the oil it will come away from the skin, leaving a pattern
that starts out orange and within 48 hours darkens to a red-brown.
Depending on the length of time, area of the body, and your skin type
determines the hue and duration of the design. Protecting
the design from water is important to make it last; use the same oil when
the area is prone to get wet (bathing, cleaning, etc.). Only the surface
skin is dyed so as the skin exfoliates the pattern will go away, don't use
any type of lotion or moisturizer on the pattern, as this will accelerate
the process.
